Individuals Receiving Social Security Benefits December 2006
At December 31, 2006, approximately 49 million individuals in the United States — almost one out of every six — were receiving Social Security benefits of some form. Sixty-three percent of those beneficiaries were retired workers and 14% were disabled workers. The remaining 23% were survivors or the spouses and children of retired, disabled or deceased workers.
