Spending on Mandatory Programs for 2007

Mandatory Spending encompasses a broad range of social programs implemented by the U.S. government primarily over the past 70 years. The projected growth of three of these programs—Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid—has had and will continue to have a profound effect upon the composition of the federal budget. The consequences of this growth will be explored in greater detail in upcoming charts.

    Is not the Medicaid spending on this chart the part paid by the Federal Gov’t.? The state and county governments are being bankrupted by Medicaid as well (Monroe County, NY is anyway). It would be nice to know the total US Medicaid spending as a % of GDP. This all comes out of our pockets…

    You are correct. The Medicaid spending shown in this chart ($190 billion) is only the U.S. Government portion. We will attempt to locate the Medicaid data for the states to show the complete picture for this program.
