Life Expectancy of U. S. Population at Birth 1950 – 2000
Aging populations are primarily due to decline in fertility rate, decline in mortality rate and increased life expectancy. Since 1950, the life expectancy of both male and female residents of the United States has increased nearly 10 years. This means that beneficiaries of entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare must be paid for 10 years longer than originally planned in earlier decades.
