Growth of U.S. Population (Selected Age Brackets) 1980 – 2006
Between 1980 and 2006 the number of residents aged 75 and over increased 83% to 18.3 million, residents between the ages of 65 and 75 increased 45.7% to 37.3 million, and residents between the ages of 55 and 65 increased 45% to 68.8 million. During the same period, the population as a whole increased 32.8%. Clearly the United States population is aging, a consequence of increased life expectancy and a higher fertility rate during the Baby Boom and a lower fertility rate in subsequent decades.
